When you travel a lot, there is hardly time to catch up with home affairs. There is the garden, the house, the fence, the car… all is crying to be maintained and if not looked after it will soon fall apart. That is what happened to my fence. It needed pressure washing, replacing of some pickets, painting and so on.

So, I promised my wife, before I leave again I will at least pressure wash it and replace some rotten pickets. So one Saturday I actually kept my promise and started with the pressure wash. Suddenly when I put the jet against the fence one of the pickets from the other side – actually the neighbors side was blown away. How could that have happened? Well, it was not properly fixed to the pole, got loose and when the pressure came it could not stand against the pressure.

How is it in your life? Are you really connected to Jesus or can it happen that when the pressure comes you are blown away, falling apart and get disconnected?

But the story went on. I realized that there was two pickets, right beside each other. One was dirty, the other wasn’t. When I continued cleaning, that thought didn’t leave my mind. How can it be that two pickets can stand right beside each other, same air, same pollution, same weather-side…. and yet different look? Well, to be honest I didn’t get an answer, but it lead me into thinking about some Christians. We live in the same world. Some work beside each other. They may go to the same church, sing in the same choir, and share the same home-cell. Both exposed to the same filth that is in this world and yet one stays clean and one becomes “dirty”. How can that be?

John 15:3 says: “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”

My question is, is the Word in us? If the Word of God is only in our mind, on our lips, but not in our spirit and soul, it will not keep us clean. Spirit, soul and body need to be aligned and in unity. As the father, son and the Holy Spirit are one, Our spirit, soul and body need to be one. So many people are living a separated live. The spirit wants one thing, but the soul says something else and the body does his own.

Jesus said, what ever I see the father do, I do. What ever I hear the father say, I say.

Paul understood the problem and was battling that situation. He said the good thing that I want to do, I do not do and the evil that I don’t want to do, I do. (Rom 7:19). Unless our spirit, soul and body are aligned with the will of God we will struggle and even if our spirit rejoices, our soul may be down and our body will not worship. With our lips we do one thing, but our soul and spirit does another thing and we may get effected by the filth of this world. Align yourself with the will of God and His spirit will affect your soul and body as well.

The spirit is renewed and wants to do what the father says. However, the soul has another mood and the body responses in another way.

For example: We worship God, however our soul is discouraged or sad – hence the body does not take part in the worship. We don’t lift our hands….

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is– his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Rom 12:2)
